What’s Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is a holistic practice that harmonizes the body, mind, and spirit through a blend of physical exercises and meditation. Unlocking your potential, it guides you to discover your true self and strive towards your utmost excellence. It is often referred to as the "yoga of awareness." The primary focus of Kundalini Yoga is to awaken the dormant spiritual energy (kundalini) believed to reside at the base of the spine.

Introduced to the Western world in the late '70s by Yogi Bhajan, Kundalini yoga combines breath, movement, and sound. Rooted in the Sanskrit word "kundal," meaning "coiled energy," the practice involves guiding energy from the base of the spine through the seven chakras, culminating at the crown of the head. This process is thought to enhance spiritual awareness, promote physical well-being, and foster a deep sense of connection and consciousness.

Yogi Bhajan describes the growth process in Kundalini Yoga as a natural unfolding of one's own nature, akin to shedding old skins to reveal more of one's authentic self. The ultimate goal is heightened self-awareness achieved by quieting the mind and unblocking chakras, allowing vital energy to flow freely.

Kundalini Yoga classes may vary, but they typically involve a specific sequence of exercises called a "kriya," which is designed to achieve a particular outcome, such as increased energy, stress reduction, or emotional balance. The practice is known for its emphasis on personal experience and the idea that everyone can access their spiritual potential.
